What Does a Standard House Cleaning Include? A Room-by-Room Checklist

A standard house cleaning includes dusting, wiping down surfaces, cleaning the kitchen and bathrooms, and vacuuming and mopping the floors in every lived-in room, while ovens, fridges and windows are usually add-ons.

What does a standard house cleaning include?

A standard house cleaning is a top-to-bottom maintenance clean of the rooms you use every day: kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms and living areas. It covers the surfaces you touch, the dust you see and the floors you walk on. It does not cover the inside of appliances, inside cabinets or a full wash of walls and windows.

Think of it as the clean that keeps a home in good shape, not the clean that rescues it. The cleaner works through each room in the same order, usually from high to low and from the back of the room toward the door, so dust falls onto floors that have not been cleaned yet.

Most standard cleanings follow the same three layers in every room:

  • Dust: reachable shelves, ledges, furniture tops, picture frames and decor.
  • Surfaces: counters, tables, handles, switches and anything people touch often.
  • Floors: vacuumed, then mopped on hard floors.

A standard cleaning is a maintenance clean. It assumes the home is in fair shape and keeps it that way.

What gets cleaned in the kitchen?

The kitchen gets the most attention in a standard cleaning because it collects grease, crumbs and fingerprints fastest. Counters, the stovetop, the sink and the outside of appliances are cleaned, and the floor is vacuumed and mopped. The inside of the oven and fridge is usually extra.

A typical kitchen checklist:

  • Counters and backsplash wiped and dried
  • Stovetop and burner area degreased
  • Outside of the fridge, oven, microwave and dishwasher wiped, including handles
  • Inside of the microwave wiped
  • Sink scrubbed and faucet polished
  • Cabinet fronts spot-cleaned where there are drips or fingerprints
  • Table and chairs wiped
  • Trash taken out and the bin wiped
  • Floor vacuumed and mopped, including along the edges

With Extol Cleaning, the oven, the fridge and dishes are add-ons you choose when you ask for a quote. The inside of the cabinets is cleaned only in empty homes, during move-in and move-out cleaning.

What gets cleaned in the bathroom?

Every bathroom gets a full clean in a standard visit: toilet inside and out, shower and tub, sink, vanity, mirror and floor. Bathrooms are where buildup shows first, so this is where a good cleaner slows down and works on the details.

A typical bathroom checklist:

  • Toilet cleaned inside, outside, around the base and behind the seat hinges
  • Shower walls, tub and glass door scrubbed for soap scum
  • Sink, faucet and vanity top cleaned
  • Mirror cleaned without streaks
  • Towel bars, toilet paper holder and light switches wiped
  • Trash emptied
  • Floor vacuumed and mopped, with extra care around the toilet base

Bathrooms in a standard cleaning are cleaned every visit, not on rotation.

What happens in bedrooms and living areas?

Bedrooms and living areas get dusting, surface wiping and floor care. The cleaner dusts reachable surfaces, wipes what people touch, straightens what is out in the open and vacuums or mops every floor. Changing bed linens is often an add-on, not a default.

A typical bedroom and living area checklist:

  • Dressers, nightstands, shelves and decor dusted
  • Furniture tops, side tables and coffee tables wiped
  • Light switches and door handles wiped
  • Mirrors and glass surfaces cleaned
  • Upholstered furniture vacuumed on the surface
  • Beds made with the linens already on them
  • Floors vacuumed and mopped, including under easy-to-reach furniture

Clients often notice the small details more than the big ones. One Extol Cleaning client put it this way:

"Every tiny nook and cranny was done plus she was super pleasant!!" (Gretchen B., October 2024)

What is usually not included in a standard cleaning?

A standard cleaning leaves out work that needs extra time per item: inside the oven and fridge, windows, laundry, linen changes and dishes. Most companies offer these as add-ons. Baseboards, doors and light fixtures in detail are part of a deep cleaning instead.

Here is how those items work at Extol Cleaning:

Item In a standard house cleaning? How to get it
Inside the oven No Add-on, or included in deep cleaning
Inside the fridge No Add-on, or included in deep cleaning
Interior windows No Add-on, or included in deep cleaning
Exterior windows No Always an add-on
Laundry No Add-on
Linen change No Add-on
Dishes No Add-on
Baseboards, doors, light fixtures Part of deep cleaning Included in deep cleaning
Walls Dusted and spot-cleaned Walls are never fully washed
Inside cabinets No Only in empty homes, during move cleaning

Knowing this list before the visit avoids the most common disappointment with any cleaner: expecting something the service never covered. If you are unsure which items your home needs, Call (781) 528-7227Text us and describe the home.

How do you get your home ready for a standard cleaning?

The best preparation is simple: pick up clutter, decide on access and tell the cleaner about pets and priorities. A cleaner can clean a surface much better than they can organize it, so ten small piles of mail or toys slow down everything else.

A short prep list:

  1. Pick up loose items from counters, floors and tables so surfaces can be cleaned, not just cleaned around.
  2. Put away valuables and paperwork you would rather no one moves.
  3. Decide on access. With Extol Cleaning you do not need to be home; a key or door code is fine.
  4. Tell the team about pets. Extol welcomes dogs and cats.
  5. Name your priorities. If the kitchen matters most this time, say so when you book.
  6. Skip the supply run. Extol brings all supplies, with an eco-friendly option.

Book at least 24 hours ahead. Extol Cleaning visits run Monday to Friday, 7 am to 10 pm, and weekends only by special arrangement.

When is a standard cleaning not enough?

A standard cleaning is not enough when a home has not had a professional clean in months, has visible buildup on baseboards, doors and fixtures, or is empty before or after a move. In those cases a deep cleaning or a move cleaning resets the home first.

Signs you need more than a standard visit:

  • Grease on cabinet fronts and the range hood that does not wipe off
  • Gray lines along baseboards and around door frames
  • Dust on light fixtures and ceiling fans
  • Soap scum that has built up for months
  • An empty home that needs inside cabinets and appliances cleaned

Extol Cleaning's deep cleaning adds the oven, fridge, interior windows, baseboards, doors and light fixtures. After that reset, a standard or recurring cleaning keeps the home there.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a standard and a deep house cleaning?

A standard house cleaning maintains a home that is already in fair shape: surfaces, dusting, kitchen, bathrooms and floors. A deep cleaning goes further. At Extol Cleaning it adds the inside of the oven and fridge, interior windows, baseboards, doors and light fixtures. Most homes need a deep cleaning first if months have passed since the last professional clean, and a standard cleaning after that.

Does a standard house cleaning include inside the fridge?

Usually not. The outside of the fridge and its handles are wiped in a standard cleaning, but the inside is an add-on with most companies. At Extol Cleaning, the inside of the fridge is an add-on you can choose when you ask for a quote, and it is included automatically in deep cleaning and in move-in and move-out cleaning.

Do house cleaners wash walls?

Most standard cleanings do not include washing walls. Cleaners dust them and remove visible marks. Extol Cleaning dusts walls and spot-cleans them where needed, but never fully washes them, in any service. If a wall has a scuff or a fingerprint near a light switch, spot-cleaning handles it. A full wall wash is outside what a cleaning visit covers.

Do I need to provide cleaning supplies?

It depends on the company, so ask before the first visit. Extol Cleaning brings all supplies to every job, and there is an eco-friendly option if you prefer it. If you have a product you want used on a specific surface, such as stone counters or a special floor, leave it out and mention it when you book.

Do I need to be home during the cleaning?

No, not with most professional cleaners. Many people leave a key or share a door code and come back to a clean home. Extol Cleaning works with either a key or a code. Dogs and cats are welcome, so let the team know about your pets and any room they should keep closed.

What if something on the checklist was missed?

Walk through the home when you get back and compare it against what was agreed. With Extol Cleaning, if anything was missed, tell the team within 24 hours and they come back and redo it at no cost. Mention the exact spot, a photo by text helps, so it gets fixed right the first time.
