Deep Cleaning vs. Regular Cleaning: What's Actually Different

Regular cleaning maintains a home that is already in fair shape, while deep cleaning resets it, adding the places routine visits skip: inside the oven and fridge, interior windows, baseboards, doors and light fixtures.

What is the real difference between deep cleaning and regular cleaning?

The difference is scope, not effort. A regular cleaning repeats the same core list every visit: surfaces, dusting, kitchen, bathrooms and floors. A deep cleaning does that list and then adds the places that collect grime slowly and get skipped for months, such as baseboards, door frames, light fixtures and appliance interiors.

A useful way to think about it: regular cleaning removes this week's dirt, deep cleaning removes this year's. Regular cleaning is built to be repeated on a schedule. Deep cleaning is built to be done once in a while, or once before a regular schedule starts.

Regular cleaning is maintenance. Deep cleaning is a reset. Most homes need both, in that order: reset first, then maintain.

What does a deep cleaning add? A side-by-side table

A deep cleaning adds six main areas on top of a regular clean: the inside of the oven, the inside of the fridge, interior windows, baseboards, doors and light fixtures. Everything a regular cleaning covers stays in. The table shows a typical comparison; the deep-cleaning, add-on, wall and cabinet lines follow what Extol Cleaning includes.

Area Regular cleaning Deep cleaning
Kitchen counters, sink, stovetop Yes Yes
Outside of appliances Yes Yes
Bathrooms: toilet, tub, shower, sink, mirror Yes Yes
Dusting of reachable surfaces Yes Yes
Floors vacuumed and mopped Yes Yes
Inside the oven Add-on Included
Inside the fridge Add-on Included
Interior windows Add-on Included
Baseboards Part of deep cleaning Included
Doors and door frames Part of deep cleaning Included
Light fixtures Part of deep cleaning Included: removable parts are taken down, washed and put back
Walls Dusted and spot-cleaned Dusted and spot-cleaned, never fully washed
Exterior windows Add-on Add-on
Inside cabinets No No (only in empty homes, during move cleaning)

Two lines in that table surprise people. Walls are not washed in either service; they are dusted and spot-cleaned. And exterior windows are always an add-on, even in a deep cleaning.

How do you know your home needs a deep cleaning?

Your home needs a deep cleaning when a regular wipe-down no longer makes it look clean. Common signs: gray lines on baseboards, grease on the range hood and cabinet fronts, dust on light fixtures, soap scum in the shower and a fridge you avoid opening. Months without a professional clean almost always means a deep clean first.

Specific signs to look for:

  • Baseboards and door frames have a visible line of dust or scuffs.
  • Light fixtures show dust or insects when the light is on.
  • The oven smokes or smells when it heats up.
  • The fridge has spills on the shelves or old food in the drawers.
  • Interior windows and sills have film, dust or residue in the tracks.
  • Shower glass stays cloudy after a regular scrub.

Life events are signs too. A new baby, a guest coming to stay, a home that has been closed up, or a change of season are all common reasons people book a deep clean.

Is a deep cleaning just a longer regular cleaning?

No. A deep cleaning is a different checklist, not the same checklist done slower. The cleaner works on items that are never part of a regular visit, such as taking down removable parts of light fixtures, washing them and putting them back, or cleaning the full inside of the oven and fridge.

On pricing: at Extol Cleaning, price depends on home size, counted in bedrooms and bathrooms, or it is a fixed price after Tamiris Kempner sees the home. When a visit is not practical, she quotes without one.

What a client notices after a deep cleaning is usually the detail work. One Extol Cleaning client described it this way:

"I had a deep home cleaning service, and from start to finish, everything was absolutely amazing! They were professional, punctual, and extremely detail-oriented." (Amy S., January 2026)

How often should you get a deep cleaning?

Most homes do well with a deep cleaning once or twice a year, plus regular cleaning in between. Many people schedule it in spring and fall, which is what a seasonal cleaning is: a deep cleaning booked for spring or fall. Homes with heavy use, pets or long gaps between cleanings may need it more often.

A simple rule of thumb:

  • On a weekly or biweekly schedule: a deep cleaning once or twice a year is usually enough, because regular visits keep buildup low.
  • On a monthly schedule: a deep cleaning twice a year helps, since more builds up between visits.
  • No regular cleaning: start with a deep cleaning, then decide on a schedule.

A recurring schedule also protects the deep clean. At Extol Cleaning, recurring visits keep baseboards up and spot-clean interior windows, so the reset lasts longer.

How does deep cleaning compare with move-out cleaning?

Move-in and move-out cleaning is a deep cleaning for an empty home, with extra items that are only possible when nothing is inside. At Extol Cleaning it includes everything in a deep cleaning plus the inside of cabinets, the washer and dryer, and the inside of the dishwasher, including the filter.

The key difference is the furniture. In a lived-in home, cabinets are full and appliances are in use, so the inside of cabinets is not part of a deep clean. Once the home is empty, those areas become reachable.

Service Best for Inside cabinets
Regular cleaning Homes in fair shape, on a schedule No
Deep cleaning Lived-in homes that need a reset No
Move-in or move-out cleaning Empty homes before or after a move Yes

Frequently asked questions

Is deep cleaning worth it if I already have a regular cleaner?

Yes, once or twice a year. Regular visits keep surfaces, bathrooms, kitchens and floors under control, but they are not built to reach inside the oven and fridge or to work through every baseboard, door and light fixture. A periodic deep cleaning handles that layer, so your regular cleaning keeps working the way it should.

Should my first cleaning be a deep cleaning?

Usually, yes, if the home has not had a professional clean in months. A first regular cleaning in a home with built-up grime spends its effort on catching up instead of maintaining. A deep cleaning resets the home, and regular cleaning after that has something to maintain. If the home is already in fair shape, a standard house cleaning can be enough.

Does deep cleaning include washing walls?

No. At Extol Cleaning, walls are dusted and spot-cleaned where needed in every service, including deep cleaning, but they are never fully washed. Spot-cleaning removes marks such as fingerprints around light switches or scuffs near doors. If a wall needs more than that, it is outside what a cleaning visit covers.

Are exterior windows part of a deep cleaning?

No. Deep cleaning at Extol Cleaning includes interior windows, but exterior windows are always an add-on, in every service. If you want both sides of the glass done, ask for the exterior windows add-on when you request your quote, so it is planned into the visit from the start.

What is the difference between deep cleaning and seasonal cleaning?

A seasonal cleaning is a deep cleaning scheduled for spring or fall. The checklist is the same: oven, fridge, interior windows, baseboards, doors and light fixtures on top of the regular items. The difference is timing. Many people like to reset the home as the weather changes and windows open or close for the season.

Can I add items to a regular cleaning instead of booking a deep clean?

Yes, for some items. At Extol Cleaning, the oven, fridge, windows, laundry, linen change and dishes are add-ons you can choose with a regular cleaning. Baseboards, doors and light fixtures in detail come with a deep cleaning. If several deep-clean items are on your list, a full deep cleaning usually makes more sense.
