Fall Cleaning Checklist Before the Holidays

Fall Cleaning Checklist Before the Holidays

A fall house cleaning checklist gets your home guest-ready before the holidays: a deep clean of the kitchen and oven, a fresh guest room and bathroom, and dust cleared before the heat comes on.

Why clean in the fall instead of waiting for spring?

Because fall is when the house is about to work hardest. Between Thanksgiving and New Year's, most homes host more people, cook more meals and spend more time with the windows closed than at any other point in the year. Cleaning in the fall means guests arrive to a clean house and you start the indoor season with less dust in circulation.

Spring cleaning is about undoing winter. Fall cleaning is about preparing for it: the kitchen that will cook the big meals, the guest room that has been closed since summer, the bathroom your visitors will use, and the vents and baseboards that will move warm air for months.

A fall cleaning is planned backward from the first holiday guest. Count the weeks to your first gathering and schedule from there.

What does "guest-ready" actually mean?

Guest-ready means the rooms guests will see and use are clean at close range, not just tidy from across the room: a spotless guest bathroom, a fresh bed with clean linens, a kitchen you are happy to cook in with people watching, and entries and living areas without dust on the surfaces at eye level.

It is a word clients use themselves. One Extol Cleaning client wrote about her regular cleanings:

"Tamires and her team are absolutely wonderful! They started doing regular, biweekly cleanings at our house earlier this year and it has made a huge difference. Tamires is so kind and helpful and she and her team always leave the house gorgeous and feeling so fresh. They go above and beyond on the little details (such as cleaning inside our dog’s crate, putting away dishes, etc.). I would highly recommend their services to anyone in need of a cleaner and more livable / guest-ready home!" Carmen H., August 2025 (Google review)

Guests judge a home by the guest bathroom, the guest bed and the kitchen. Those three areas go first on a fall checklist.

What should a fall cleaning checklist include?

A fall checklist focuses on the rooms holidays put pressure on: the kitchen and its appliances, the guest room, the bathrooms, the dining and living areas, and the entry. Add the dust that summer left on fans, fixtures and vents, because it will spread through the house once the heat comes on.

Kitchen, before the big meals

  • Clean inside the oven and the racks before you roast anything
  • Empty and clean the fridge to make room for holiday food
  • Wipe cabinet fronts, handles and the tops of upper cabinets
  • Degrease the range hood surface and the backsplash
  • Clear and wipe the counters you will use for serving

Guest room

  • Wash the bedding, even if the bed has not been used since summer
  • Dust the nightstands, dresser, lamps and the headboard
  • Vacuum under the bed and inside the closet
  • Clear a drawer and a few hangers for guests

Bathrooms

  • Scrub the toilet, tub, shower and grout
  • Clean the mirror, sink and faucet until they shine
  • Set out clean towels and a spare roll of paper

Dining and living areas

  • Dust light fixtures and the chandelier over the table
  • Wipe the dining table and chairs, including the legs and rungs
  • Vacuum the sofa, under the cushions and under the furniture

Entry

  • Clean the front door, both sides, and the threshold
  • Set up a mat and a spot for wet boots and coats

What should you clean before the heating season starts?

Clean the surfaces that the heat will blow dust from: vent covers, radiators, baseboard heater covers, baseboards, ceiling fan blades and the top edges of doors and cabinets. Once the system runs every day, anything sitting there circulates through the house. Doing it in early fall keeps that dust out of the air your guests breathe.

A short pre-heat list:

  • Dust and wipe radiator tops and baseboard heater covers
  • Vacuum and wipe vent and return covers
  • Dust ceiling fan blades before you switch the fans to winter mode
  • Wipe baseboards in every room
  • Wash interior windows while you can still open them for a few days

Filter changes, duct work and system service belong to your heating technician, not a cleaning service.

Dust that sits on heat sources all fall ends up in the air all winter. The pre-heat clean is the part of a fall checklist that pays off longest.

How do you time a fall cleaning around the holidays?

Aim for the first half of November if Thanksgiving is your first gathering, and early December if your first guests come for the winter holidays. That gives you a deep clean close enough to the event to still be fresh, with time for a lighter tidy-up the week guests arrive.

Weeks before guests What to do
Four to six Book the fall cleaning; holiday dates fill fast
Two to four Deep cleaning: kitchen, oven, fridge, baseboards, fixtures, interior windows
One Guest room linens, bathrooms touched up, entry ready
Day before Quick tidy, fresh towels, trash out

The weeks before Thanksgiving and the December holidays are typically busy for house cleaners in Greater Boston and the North Shore. If you want a specific date, ask early.

Fall cleaning or recurring cleaning: which do you need?

A fall cleaning is one deep reset before the holidays. A recurring cleaning keeps the house at that level week to week, so you are not starting from zero every time guests come. Many households do both: a seasonal deep cleaning to reset, then a weekly, biweekly or monthly visit to keep it there through the season.

At Extol Cleaning, a seasonal cleaning is a deep cleaning scheduled for spring or fall. It includes the oven, the fridge, interior windows, baseboards, doors and light fixtures on top of bathrooms, kitchen, dusting and floors. A recurring plan keeps up with baseboards and spot-cleans interior windows between deep cleanings.

Add-ons for the busy season include changing bed linens, laundry and dishes, which helps when the guest room has to turn around between visitors. Walls are dusted and spot-cleaned, not washed, and exterior windows are always an add-on.

Frequently asked questions

When should I schedule a fall cleaning?

Schedule it two to four weeks before your first holiday guests and book it four to six weeks ahead. For a Thanksgiving gathering, that usually means a cleaning in the first half of November. The weeks right before the holidays are busy for cleaning companies, so earlier requests have more dates to choose from.

What is the difference between spring and fall cleaning?

Both are deep cleanings, but the focus changes. Spring cleaning undoes winter: salt and sand at the entries and dust from months of heat. Fall cleaning prepares for the holidays and the heating season: the kitchen and oven, the guest room, bathrooms and the dust on vents and radiators before the heat runs daily.

Is the oven included in a fall cleaning?

Yes. At Extol Cleaning, a seasonal cleaning is a deep cleaning, and it includes the inside of the oven and the fridge, along with interior windows, baseboards, doors and light fixtures. That makes fall a natural time for it, since both appliances are about to get heavy use during the holidays.

Can you change the guest bed linens?

Yes, as an add-on. Linen change, laundry and dishes can be added to a cleaning visit. Leave the clean set of sheets out or tell the team where it is kept, so the guest bed can be made up fresh. It is a simple way to make sure the guest room is ready.

Do I need to be home during the cleaning?

No. Extol Cleaning can get in with a key or a door code arranged in advance, which helps during busy holiday weeks. When you get home, walk through the guest room, bathrooms and kitchen first. If something was missed, tell Extol Cleaning within 24 hours and they come back to re-clean it at no cost.

What if I need to reschedule because of holiday plans?

Extol Cleaning asks for 48 hours' notice to cancel a visit. Cancelling between 48 and 24 hours before the visit costs 50% of the visit; under 24 hours costs the full price. Holiday plans change often, so pick a date you are confident about and let them know as early as you can.
